Retaining Walls in Indianapolis and Central Indiana
A retaining wall holds a change in grade, and almost every wall that fails does it because of water rather than because of the wall itself.

A retaining wall holds soil at two different elevations so you can use both of them. Building one that lasts is mostly base and drainage: a properly prepared and compacted footing beneath it, and a way for water behind it to escape instead of pushing.
It helps to think about what a wall is actually resisting. Soil pushes sideways, and that push is manageable. Saturated soil pushes much harder, because now the wall is holding back water as well as dirt. In Central Indiana, where the ground is heavy clay that drains slowly, the soil behind a wall stays wet long after a rain has stopped. A wall built here without drainage behind it is being asked to do a job nobody designed it for.
So the parts you never see are the parts that decide the outcome. The trench and the compacted base under the first course, which is what keeps the wall from settling unevenly. Clean stone behind the wall and a drain that takes water to somewhere it can leave. Backfill placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped. Get those right and the visible wall is the easy part. Get them wrong and no amount of good stone above will save it.
We build block walls and stone walls, we replace walls that have already failed, and we tie them into driveways, grade changes and the surrounding ground so the finished site works as one thing. This runs for homeowners holding a slope back off a yard, for builders needing grade held on a lot, and for businesses and municipalities.
How a retaining wall job runs
Describe the grade problem to the office
How much fall you are trying to hold, what is above it and below it, and whether an existing wall is failing.
Service area and scope
We confirm the property is in our area and work out the length, the height and whether this is new or a replacement.
We look at the site and the water
On site we read the slope, where water arrives from, what the soil is doing and what the wall has to tie into.
Written estimate
The estimate covers the base, the wall, the drainage behind it, the backfill and how the ground is finished at both levels.
Scheduling, permits and locates
The office arranges permits and any inspection required, plus the Indiana 811 locate before the excavation begins.
Build it, drain it, grade it, close it out
The crew keeps you informed as the wall goes up, and the job closes with a final inspection and the invoice.
Why walls lean, bulge and fail
Walk any older neighborhood and the failed walls tell the same story in three chapters. First the wall leans slightly at one section. Then that section bulges outward while the rest stays put. Then a course pops and the soil behind starts coming with it. Almost always the cause is water that had nowhere to go, freezing and thawing and pushing on a wall that was never given a drain, so the pressure behind it went up every wet season until something gave.
The second most common cause is underneath. A wall set on soil that was not excavated to a proper base and compacted will settle unevenly, and a wall that settles unevenly opens joints, and open joints let soil and water through, which accelerates everything. Both of these are decisions made in the first day of the build and paid for years later, which is why we would rather spend the time on the base and the drainage than on anything you can see from the driveway.

What this does not cover
Where a wall is tall enough or loaded enough to require an engineered design, that design comes from an engineer and we build to it, since engineering a structure and constructing it are two different jobs. Paver patios, planting, lighting and decorative work on top of or around a finished wall are a landscaper's lane. If a wall you are describing turns out to be a foundation problem on a building rather than a grade problem in a yard, that is a different conversation and we will tell you so.
Retaining Wall Questions
What goes behind a retaining wall?
Clean stone and a drain, so water arriving behind the wall has an easy path out instead of collecting and pushing. In clay ground like ours that is not optional detailing, it is the difference between a wall that stands and a wall that leans. The backfill in front of that stone gets placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped in one go.
Can you fix a wall that is already leaning?
Sometimes a section can be rebuilt, and sometimes the honest answer is that the base and the drainage were never there and the wall is going to keep doing what it is doing. Which one applies depends on what we find when we look at the base, the height and where the water is coming from. We would rather tell you that at the estimate than take money for a repair that will not hold.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
It depends on the height and on your community, and it is one of the things the office sorts out once the scope is settled. Permits, utility locates and inspections are part of what we arrange rather than something handed back to you. Indiana also requires a call to 811 before any digging, with two working days of notice, and that applies to a wall excavation like anything else.
Do you build walls for builders on new construction?
Yes. Holding grade on a new lot, retaining a driveway cut, and building walls a site plan calls for are all regular work, alongside residential walls and work for businesses and municipalities. The sequence is the same: the office takes the details, we read the site in person, and the scope goes in writing before it is scheduled.
Retaining Wall Work, in Their Words

“These guys are top notch! They care about the quality of their work and do whatever is necessary to keep the customer happy. I've had them do two retaining wall jobs at my house and would highly recommend them to anyone. Great crew to work with.”
