Working since1964

Wharff Excavating is a Lebanon, Indiana company. One shop, family owned and operated, working since 1964 and licensed as a Wrecking General Contractor. Everything on our list is available here: water lines, sewer and sump lines, sump pits and pumps, drainage, boring, erosion control, demolition, retaining walls, drives, finish grade, culverts, ponds, land clearing, carbon fiber strapping and storm shelters.

Being based in a town changes what a customer gets in a practical way rather than a sentimental one. The shop, the equipment and the people are already here, so there is no travel built into a Lebanon job that a job an hour away would carry. The office answering the phone is the same office that will write the estimate.

The work in Boone County covers the full range because the county does. There are older homes in town with lines that have outlived their material, newer construction that needs shaping and drainage from the start, farm ground with tile and pond questions, and commercial and municipal property that needs the same things at a larger size.

The ground under Boone County

Boone County ground is the same heavy glacial till that runs under most of Central Indiana: clay rich, dense, and slow to give water up. It is good ground to build on and a poor place to expect a hole to drain itself. Anywhere water has to be gotten rid of here, it will be a pipe or a grade that does it, not the soil.

That same clay is why the flat spots hold. Land with almost no fall, sitting on subsoil that will not take water in, ends up with standing water after a storm and stays soft long after. Whether the answer is a swale, a drain line, a culvert, a pond or simply moving dirt depends on where the water is coming from and where there is anywhere lower to send it.

All fifteen services, offered in our own town

The process for a job three miles from the shop is the process for any other. The office gathers the details, we determine the scope, we meet you at the site, and a detailed written estimate goes out before anything is scheduled. Permits, utility locates and inspections are ours to handle.

Excavating in Lebanon: Common Questions

Are you actually based in Lebanon, or just serving it?

Based here. Wharff Excavating operates one shop, and it is in Lebanon, Indiana. The family has run the business from Central Indiana since 1964. Everything we send out to Hamilton, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan and Boone County work leaves from here, which is a straightforward fact rather than a marketing line.

What is the whole list of services you offer?

Fifteen: water lines, sewer and sump lines, sump pits and pumps, drainage, directional boring, erosion control, demolition, retaining walls, driveways, finish grade, culverts, ponds, land clearing, carbon fiber strapping and storm shelters. Each has its own page on this site explaining what the work involves and when it is the right answer.

Who do you work for besides homeowners?

Contractors, builders, businesses and municipalities, along with homeowners. A residential drainage job and a municipal one differ in scale, in coordination and in what the inspection process requires, but the underlying work is the same and one shop does all of it.

A Customer in Boone County

From our Google profile, in their words.

“Our home is in a lower, recessed area of the neighborhood and has a tennis court surrounded by forested landscape, wildlife and a creek running the perimeter of the property. While not in a flood zone, we do have challenges with heavy rain and creek overflow. We have used Matt’s services since we bought this home in 2013. He has provided services ranging from French drainage systems to Riprap with cement armoring for creek bank stabilization. In addition, he installed high-tech carbon fiber belts to the tennis court creek bulkhead (retaining wall) to support its structure. We are extremely pleased with Wharff Excavating LLC. Matt and his crew are ALWAYS quick, proficient and professional, providing the highest standard of quality grading, erosion and excavation workmanship you can find in the Indianapolis area. We highly recommend Wharff Excavating services.”
