Land Clearing, Grading and Excavating in Whitestown, Indiana

Whitestown is a short run from our shop in Lebanon, and it is Boone County ground going through the change from farmed acres to built lots.

Wharff Excavating is based one county seat away, in Lebanon, Indiana, and Whitestown is part of our home county. The work here starts at the beginning of a project: clearing the ground, shaping it, putting in the water service, setting culverts at the approach, and establishing the drainage that everything afterward relies on.

Ground coming out of production has a history that matters. Field tile was laid across most of this county at some point, and on a parcel being built on, that tile may be intact, broken, or draining something from a neighboring field straight through the middle of the site. Whatever it is doing, it is doing it before anyone breaks ground, and it will keep doing it afterward unless it is dealt with.

Fill is the other thing decided early and lived with forever. Material placed into a low area has to go down in lifts and be compacted, or it will settle under whatever ends up on top of it, and settlement beneath a slab, a patio or an apron surfaces a year or two later as a crack nobody can account for. Placing it properly the first time is inexpensive. Correcting it afterward means taking up the thing that settled.

Boone County ground and what building on it involves

The till under Boone County holds a lot of clay and gives water up slowly. On ground that has just been cleared and shaped, that means the site depends entirely on the grade and the pipe that was put in, since the soil will not take the water for you. It also means compaction behaves predictably, which is useful, and that wet clay is unpleasant to work, which is simply true.

Frost reaching roughly thirty two inches sets the floor for a water service, and Central Indiana being tornado country is the reason a storm shelter comes up on new construction here. Both are decisions with a right time, and the right time is while the ground is open and the machine is already on the site.

Whitestown Excavating Questions

What does finish grade actually mean on a build?

Bringing the ground to its final shape and elevation so that water leaves the building and the lot the way it is supposed to, and so whatever goes on top, sod, stone or pavement, sits on something even. It is the last chance to fix a drainage direction cheaply, which is why it is worth doing carefully rather than quickly.

Should the drainage go in before or after the drive?

Before, or at the same time. A drive laid across ground where the water has not been resolved will be the thing that traps it, and the culvert and any drain lines under or beside it are far cheaper to place while the ground is open. Retrofitting drainage under a finished drive means removing part of the drive.

How close is your shop to Whitestown?

The shop is in Lebanon, in the same county. That is a plain matter of geography and we would rather state it than dress it up: we are a Boone County business, family owned and operated since 1964, and Whitestown work does not involve a long haul for equipment.

A Customer in Boone County

From our Google profile, in their words.

“We spoke with Matt several times about our need to improve the drainage under our driveway. We had a number of questions and concerns, and he was patient with us and explained everything, including various options and their pros and cons. Once we agreed on an approach, Casey and the whole team did a great job, working efficiently and carefully, keeping us informed along the way. Casey was especially helpful, professional, and knowledgeable. We would trust Wharff Excavation to do any other work for us in the future. In the end we are extremely pleased with the results and are happy we chose Wharff Excavation.”
