Excavation, Grading and Driveway Work in Brownsburg, Indiana

Brownsburg keeps adding houses and buildings to ground that used to be farmed, and new construction is where excavation decisions get locked in for good.

Building on Hendricks County farm ground

The till under Hendricks County is dense and clay rich, and it does not percolate. Rain that soaks away in a day on sandy ground can stand for a week here. On a lot that has just been stripped and shaped, that means positive fall matters more than it would elsewhere, and it means a swale or a drain line is often part of the site work rather than an extra.

Cleared ground also moves. Bare soil on any slope will find its way into a ditch, a neighboring lot or a storm inlet during the first hard rain after clearing, and once it silts a pipe somebody is paying to clean it out. Erosion control is worth planning at the same time as the clearing, not after the first storm has already answered the question.

Wharff Excavating covers Brownsburg from a single shop in Lebanon, Indiana. Site work here runs from clearing a lot and shaping it, through the drive approach and its culvert, to the finish grade that decides where water goes for the life of the property. Family owned and operated, working Central Indiana since 1964.

Grade is the quiet decision on a new build. Once the drive is in and the sod is down, the fall across a lot is fixed, and correcting it later means undoing finished work. Getting the pitch right early, away from the foundation and toward somewhere the water can actually leave, costs a fraction of what it costs to chase the same problem two seasons later with a wet crawl space in the middle of it.

A drive approach is the other decision that lasts. Where a drive crosses a ditch it needs a culvert sized and set so the ditch keeps flowing and the pipe does not become the thing that floods the road. Set too high, too low, too short or too small, it turns into a maintenance item nobody wanted.

What Hendricks County Property Owners Ask

Can you clear a wooded lot and get it ready to build on?

That is land clearing, and it is one of the fifteen services we offer. Trees, brush, stumps and old fence lines come out, and the ground gets shaped to something a builder can work on. What happens to the material and how far the clearing extends are both things we settle in writing before starting, because they change the scope considerably.

Is a gravel drive or a paved one a better fit for a rural Brownsburg lot?

We install and rebuild gravel drives, and the base under either kind is the part that decides how long it lasts. A drive built on soft ground with no proper base will rut and pump mud up through the stone no matter what goes on top. We build the base and the drainage for it. Paving itself is not one of our services.

Do you build retaining walls, or only excavate for them?

We build them. Retaining walls are on our service list, and the excavation and the wall are really one job, because a wall stands or fails on what is behind it. Drainage behind the wall and a base that will not settle are what keep it straight. A wall built without either will lean sooner or later.
